GED Lawyers’ commitment to taking on big businesses in Corporate America while changing the public’s perception of attorneys has gotten the attention of Forbes, which recently featured the family-owned law firm in its publication.
GED Lawyers, based in Boca Raton, Florida, tells visitors on its website’s homepage that it is “a law firm with a history of winning,” and emphasizes its focus on care, compassion, professionalism, and teamwork while representing its clients with various legal challenges. GED Lawyers Focuses on Holding Insurance Companies Accountable
Since opening in 1995, the law firm has helped people with personal injury, wrongful death, natural disaster, and product liability cases, among others. To date, it has recovered more than $570 million for its clients. The firm uses its business model as it particularly focuses on helping medical providers who encounter bad faith practices from insurance companies.
Founding partner C. Glen Ged explains that over the years, the firm has represented medical professionals whose insurers would routinely underpay their reimbursement claims for treatments. “Lots of practitioners just let this ride because they don’t know how to challenge it,” Ged tells Forbes. They also let it pass because the claim is usually a small sum that insurers assume medical providers wouldn’t bother pursuing.
But the firm spotted an opportunity early on to pursue these claims, no matter how small and found that representing clients in this group was profitable and smart. “Corporate America is all about profits over people, and we will not stop until we get those people justice,” Ged says.
Technology Helps Our Firm Increase Business and Manage Growth
Holding these insurers accountable helped grow a key part of the firm’s business, and technology has helped it along the way. GED also shares in the Forbes feature that the law firm’s software allows it to identify places where medical practitioners may be missing out on reimbursements that insurers might owe them. Such programs allow the firm to bring thousands of claims against insurers monthly, increasing its business.
“The exploitation of technology has enabled GED Lawyers to supercharge its growth,” Forbes said of the firm, which reports that the firm’s business revenues have soared by 99 percent during the past three years.
“Innovation and Technology” Helps GED Lawyers Transform Its Business
GED believes technology can breathe new life into how the legal profession operates, which is largely traditional overall. As he notes, “There is a huge opportunity in the legal profession to focus on innovation and new technology. We’ve been much less advanced in that regard than most other industries, but my own firm’s experience just proves what is possible.”
The firm’s growth means it has had to nearly double its staff, which works throughout offices in Florida. Expansion plans are also underway as the firm seeks to open offices in other states. It already serves clients in Massachusetts and recently acquired The Pittman Firm to better serve clients in the Florida Panhandle.
While GED Lawyers already had an office in Panama City, Florida, the firm joined forces with Pittman to expand its geographic footprint throughout the state and fortify its mission to help consumers while going after multi-billion-dollar insurance companies. Both firms helped residents with their natural disaster claims after Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 storm, hit the area in 2018.
“I always set out to build a law firm that operates much more like a business, running day-to-day in the same way as a corporation,” co-founder Ged tells Forbes.
We Create Online Tools to Connect with Clients
Being a technology-enabled law firm also helps GED Lawyers meet its other goal, changing how the public—and potential clients—perceive attorneys. While GED sets out to challenge big business, he also wants people to know they can access affordable legal representation. However, he realizes that the firm must do more to let people know it is approachable and open about its operations.
Forbes highlights that GED Lawyers went paperless in 2008 and offers an online portal that allows clients to keep tabs on their cases. They can see how their attorneys are handling their cases and how much money is being recovered. The portal is one way to address the ongoing perception that attorneys could be more forthcoming in their communications with clients.
“The biggest complaint about many lawyers is that they are really bad at communicating, so we thought this could make a huge difference,” Ged tells Forbes.
Clients can also visit the website and find useful information about various accidents and injuries in “Client Resources.”
